The history of the British Deaf Association is quite remarkable, as was the birth of sign language and its relationship with the practice of lip reading. Politics fell hard on sign language favouring lip-reading as the main form of communication. Sign Language seemed like a thing of the past. Martha’s Vineyard played a pivotal part in reintroducing sign language to America and eventually making its way back to British shores.
